When the Champions League groups were drawn, it was Benfica and Manchester United who were expected to make it to the top two spots in December and progress to the knockout rounds. However, whilst Manchester United have been excellent their hosts have put in two shocking displays so far.
Last time out they were hammered 5-0 at the hands of group underdogs Basel, following on from their 2-1 loss at home to CSKA Moscow to leave them bottom of the group and three points off 2nd place.
Undoubtedly, Benfica could have done with last season’s star defender Victor Lindelof in these two games, but as it stands their former player could line up against them on Wednesday as Eric Bailly recovers from a slight injury. It’s the other end of Manchester United’s team that Benfica will be worried by though.
The visitors may have failed to perform at Anfield at the weekend, but they have won nine of their 11 competitive games this season and remain unbeaten. Their return to the Champions League has seen them comprehensively beat both Basel and CSKA Moscow, so an out of form Benfica side will be fearing this visit.
