Basel were always coming into this group as underdogs, but they managed to avoid humiliation in their Champions League opener earlier this month when they lost 3-0 at Old Trafford, which may seem a heavy defeat but is fairly respectable considering Manchester United’s form so far this season.
Since then the Swiss hosts have won two and lost one of their three domestic outings, and they will be hoping to get some points on the board in the Champions League at some point this season.
It’s certainly not out of the question that those points could come on Wednesday. Basel have lost just one of their last 17 competitive home games, and whilst they did lose two of their three home games in the Champions League last season it’s worth noting that they only lost to PSG 2-1 and they picked up a point against Ludogorets.
Their longer term record at home in the Champions League is fairly respectable as well. They have won four, drawn four, and lost three of their last 11 home games in the competition, with defeats coming to European giants such as Real Madrid, PSG, and Arsenal. They have picked up points against Chelsea, Liverpool, and Porto among others, and they’re facing a wounded Benfica side.
The Portuguese visitors lost 2-1 at home to CSKA Moscow in their group opener and have since one just one of their three domestic games, losing to Boavista and then drawing with Sporting Braga. Benfica have also won just three of their last 11 away days in the Champions League, so backing a Basel Win or Draw Double Chance at 7/10 looks really good value for money here.
