Portugal is a football crazy nation and has over the years produced some of the best players in the world.

Sport Lisboa e Benfica, commonly known as Benfica is one of the worlds greatest football clubs.

This historic club was Founded on 28th February 1904 and is one of Três Grandes – the Big Three clubs in Portugal. The others are long-standing rivals FC Porto and Sporting Clube De Lisboa.

Real Madrid won the first five European Cups. Under the tutelage of the legendary Bela Guttman Benfica won the next two. The Lisbon Eagles beat Barcelona to claim their first in 1961 and a year later, with Eusebio scoring twice, they beat Real 5-3 in Amsterdam.

The great Ferenc Puskas scored a hat-trick. The galloping Major sought out the youngster from Mozambique and handed him his prized shirt. Eusébio went into become Benfica and Portuguese greatest player.

Benfica is the most popularly supported national club. With almost 50% it is also the European team with the largest percentage of home supporters and has never been relegated since the establishment of the Portuguese top flight in 1934. In terms if worldwide support it is second to German giants Bayern Munich as the second biggest club in the world

The Primeira Liga champions motto is “E pluribus unum” and this means “Out if many one,”

Victory and Glory are the names of the two Benfica eagles which symbolise the club. They both live in the Estadio da Luz and on match day Victory soars round the stadium and completes the club emblem in the centre circle before kick off.

Benfica is the jewel in the crown of Portuguese football history. It’s glorious tradition, history, success and worldwide appeal make it a magnet for football lovers throughout the world.
